Voting by Proxy

Voting by Proxy

The principle way to cast your vote in the SU election this year is by attending one of the in-person ballot stations.

We’re aware that for a small number of people, they won’t be able to access campus during the voting period. If you’re unable to vote in person you can ask the Students’ Union to register your vote on your behalf. This is called a proxy vote, and a proxy vote may be permitted at the discretion of the Deputy Returning Officer.

Who Can Vote by Proxy?

You can only apply for a proxy vote under certain, exceptional circumstances, including:

Having a medical issue, illness, or disability which prevents you from accessing campus during the voting period. Not being able to vote in person because of course-related circumstances (such as a placement where you are unable to secure a leave of absence during voting hours).

Who Do I Speak To?

Please note; the list above is not exhaustive, and a request for a proxy vote may not be granted if the Deputy Returning Officer believes you have had the opportunity to cast your vote on campus during the voting period. The burden of proof to show that you require a proxy vote will be on the person requesting it, not on the Deputy Returning Officer.

Your proxy vote will still enable you to vote in the SU elections, and you will need to apply and inform the SU of which candidates you wish to vote for.

When Do I Need to Apply By?

You will be required to respond to the request for more information and the candidates you wish to vote for by 12pm on Friday 21st March. If you have not sent the information requested by this point, the right to a proxy vote will be withdrawn by the Deputy Returning Officer.

Apply for a Proxy Vote

You can get the Students’ Union to vote on your behalf (a proxy) if you cannot go to the polling station in person.

You must both be a registered student at the University of Gloucestershire and a member of the University of Gloucestershire Students’ Union to apply to proxy vote.

It will be down to the discretion of the Deputy Returning Officer and Returning Officer to deem if you are eligible to have a proxy vote.

You must apply for your proxy vote during the Students’ Union voting period. If you miss this deadline, you will not be able to proxy vote.

For guidance on if you can apply for a Proxy Vote, please see the Voting by Proxy section for eligibility.

If you are unable to make any on-site voting station and would like us to act as your proxy, please email Laurie and use the subject line of: Proxy Vote Request – [S number] for further information on how to vote.
