Despite recent data showing that most 18-25 year olds consume much less alcohol than those of previous generations, to remove student bars entirely is a step too far. Every university up and down the UK provide at least one bar for their students. Why is UoG different? It’s a stereotype to presume those who would like and attend a student bar automatically wants to down pint after pint to their hearts content, but bars provide much more than a place to drink. These include; - somewhere to relax after lectures, study or assignments/exams. - to meet up with friends from other courses or accommodations. - a place to make new friends. - somewhere safe filled with like minded individuals. - and with that, a place for those who have social anxiety or have had bad experiences at a pub/bar in the past to gain confidence and to feel welcomed in a familiar setting. In theory, the bar doesn’t really need to sell alcoholic drinks, with soft fizzy drinks with maybe the odd alcohol free (or small supply of alcoholic drinks) being available. If done right to, things such as dart boards (x2-4), pool tables (x1-2) and a classic skittle alley (x1) could all be installed, allowing for weekly or monthly tournaments to be held, providing income to UoG overtime and even giving work opportunities for students looking for some pocket money. There could even be a jukebox for a laugh and TVs with sport channels available for those sport fans who may not have been able to watch their favourite sport since joining university. Bars/pubs are the heart and soul of any community, so why not bring that back to UoG. The refractory at Pittville that’s no longer in use or “the loft” at FCH (which is where the previous bar was located and now looks and is a shadow of its former self) would be perfect locations, with tables still being out for societies to use throughout the week. If you’re in agreement, then vote and let’s bring back the heart, soul and hub of the Pittville/FCH UoG community!
