What is a Course Rep?

A Course Representative (Course Rep) is a student elected by their peers to represent their course or cohort and ensure your voice is heard at the university. They play a vital role in making sure your feedback, concerns, and ideas reach the right people, helping to improve your academic experience. Whether you have suggestions for your course, feedback about lectures, or concerns about resources, your Course Rep is here to listen and act on your behalf.

What Does a Course Rep Do?

Course Reps gather feedback from you and your coursemates about the academic side of university life. This could be anything from the quality of teaching, assessment methods, or access to resources like textbooks or software. Once they have your feedback, Course Reps meet with Academic Course Leaders and other university staff to discuss the issues raised. They are your direct link to the decision-makers, advocating for improvements and ensuring student concerns are addressed.

How Can You Work With Your Course Rep?

Keep an eye out for updates from your Course Rep. They’ll let you know about upcoming meetings, how your feedback is being used, and any changes that are being implemented. The more students share their feedback, the stronger the collective voice becomes. Use tools like Voice It to submit your feedback and support the changes that matter to you and your peers.

Why Is The Role Important?

Course Reps ensure that students have a voice in shaping their education. They make sure that issues affecting your learning are addressed and that your concerns are not only heard but acted upon. With Course Reps, the student body becomes part of the decision-making process, ensuring that your education reflects your needs and expectations.

Course Rep FAQ's

What is a Course Rep?

A course rep is a student volunteer who is elected at the start of the academic year to represent their peers. It is an important role in the Student Representative Scheme to communicate students’ issues, as well as updating the students on changes that have occurred.

Is it the same as a Student Voice Assistant?

No! Student Voice Assistants are not elected but hired to fulfill a more liaison-focused role between the student body and the university. Their role is to collect feedback from many different course reps in their academic school and relay it back to the university. They act on this feedback and incite changes.

How many are elected per course?

We ask that at least one course rep is elected per course per level, but understand this can also be influenced by the size of the course. If you are in a larger course, two course reps can be elected.

What do I get out of it?

It is a great role to experience crucial employability skills such as communication, teamwork, and time management to impress future employers. As a Course Rep, you will get exclusive access to Course Rep workshops throughout the year and the opportunity to win Course Rep of the Month.

Is it a big-time commitment?

It’s not a big-time commitment. We expect you to talk to those on your course (this could be five minutes at the start or end of a lecture), meet with your course leader once a month, and communicate with your Student Voice Assistant Team.

What is the point of elections?

The Students’ Union & the University feel very passionately about fairly electing our students in order to achieve a mechanism and space where students can voice their concerns, opinions, and views. We feel that by electing our students, we have listened to the student voice.

Training

Once elected, you will be invited to a day of course rep training. We will also offer development days throughout the academic year.
