We run a variety of introduction events and activities for the first two weeks of term one and call it Welcome. This year, our Welcome Fortnight starts on Monday 16th September and ends on Sunday 29th September. However, that's not to say our events stop after this date, the SU works closely with our sports clubs, societies and partners to organise a whole host of events throughout the year from regular Blue&Blue club nights to the Welcome Fayre to student-led events. Yes, we will have all things ranging from nightclub events and parties to chill day time sessions. There is never an obligation to drink at any event, so do come along to any that you like the sound of.
The Welcome Fayre is an amazing opportunity to meet clubs and societies, get your hands on lots of freebies and find out more about life here at UoG. We host a bunch of local companies, charities and other partners to introduce you to all that Gloucestershire has to offer. There are no bars on campus at UoG, however UoGSU has partnerships with venues around Cheltenham and Gloucester. The SU does have SU spaces on the three main UoG campuses (Park, FCH & Oxstalls) which are open throughout the day and events are held here. As a student, you can also book the bar spaces yourself. Yes, there are plenty of ways to get stuck in with the SU, including finding out more about being a Course Representative or a Student Voice Assistant, learning about the Network Lead roles and what the SU does throughout the year. You can also meet sports teams and societies in the second week of Welcome with a programme of events focussed on getting to know the teams. There will be a range of events and activities throughout the year as some great officer-led campaigns for students to get involved with. Keep an eye on the Students’ Union’s social media and events page for updates and details!
No, you can get involved with the chaplaincy whether you are religious or not. All events are open to anyone!
Within Cheltenham and Gloucester, you can usually walk between accommodation and the spaces where we’ll be hosting events and activities. If you need to travel a bit further afield then there are options… There are extensive cycle routes in both Cheltenham and Gloucester. Bus fare is capped at £2 for a single journey so it is a great way to ensure you can travel easily between campuses and events during Welcome and for the rest of the year. You can check routes and find tickets to buy on the Stagecoach app. Throughout Cheltenham and Gloucester, there are also electric scooters, including on campus.
Students wanting to get from Cheltenham to Gloucester will be able to use a combination of the scheduled services 10, 94 and N as the main bus routes, however there may be other buses better suited to your journey. Please use the Stagecoach app to find out more. These run very regularly throughout the day and into the evening. Again, please refer to the app for specific details. The N service is the primary option for those wanting to move between sites within Cheltenham, including Pittville, Park, FCH and the train station.
There is a range of walks you can go on in the area such as Crickley Hill, Leckhampton Hill, Cleeve Hill, Robinswood Hill and Birdlip. There are also some great places for shopping and eating, such as the Brewery Quarter in Cheltenham which offers a range of places to eat, as well as the High Street and Promenade for places to go shopping, or the Quays in Gloucester, which is great for shopping and socialising. If you are looking for bars and clubs to go to, the main clubs in Cheltenham are Moo Moo’s and Popworld and in Gloucester, you've got Atik. Both locations have a wide selection of bars on offer, such as Revolution, Yates and Wetherspoons.
The Park and FCH campuses are in Cheltenham and Oxstalls is in Gloucester. Park Campus is outside of town in Montpellier, FCH campus is near the town centre by Pittville Park and Oxstalls is in Gloucester, which is not too far away from Kingsholm and the city centre.
